Neo Archaic Magic // Happiness is Human-ness

Neo Archaic Magic // Happiness is Human-ness

Presented by Art Access at Art Access Gallery

Art Access Gallery: Neo Archaic Magic by Brian Bean

Our first art – cave paintings, petroglyphs, small figurines – are a fascinating mystery. Why was the art made? What purpose did it serve? Was it to leave a mark, to let others know that they were here? Was it part of a shamanistic ceremony? Did it capture the spirit of the animals they hunted? We don’t know. What we do know is that the power, the presence, the magic remains.

I want their work to inform mine. I’m not a Neolithic hunter, just a guy from the suburbs. But I know that making art can lead to a transcendent state. I want to share that creative alchemy. I want to make magic.

Access II Gallery: Happiness is Human-ness by the Artists of TURN City Center for the Arts, Curated by Natasha Hoffman

In preparation for this exhibit, the artists were asked the simple question: what are your favorite things? From there, memories and sensations were awakened to create visual representations of the favored things. Each work in this exhibition is a memento of the artists feeling content, excited, comforted, reassured, or moved to a deeper conviction of their own truths. Beyond autobiographical, they remind the viewer to engage in something that is personally meaningful, which transcends barriers of background, religion, ethnicity, and ability. They are a tribute to the minutiae of happiness, which makes us human.

The artists participating in this exhibit created their pieces at TURN City Center for the Arts, a creative learning space for adults with developmental disabilities.
