[DIS]PLACED
Presented by Downtown Artist Collective at Downtown Artist Collective
Taylor’s latest series of oil paintings explores the monolithic and monumental. Like all monuments, the figures that appear in these paintings function as avatars of political and cultural systems. He hopes to produce a certain tension by recontextualizing these monuments spatially and physically. Contrasting these figures with scenes of catastrophe and war reflects a certain kind of political eschatology or civilizational death-drive that defines the modern era.
In this work, Katie is exploring multiple forms of boundaries and expectations. Each painting begins as a written response to a real life moment where expectations couldn’t be met. This text becomes the bones of her living landscapes (a traditionally accepted genre of painting for women). And while the doubling of edges functions both as a visual device and an arbitrarily enforced limitation upon her, Katie holds no reverence for the traditional performance of a landscape.
