CALL FOR ARTISTS
Artist Allowance: $20,000
Entry Deadline: Wednesday September 18, 2019 by 11:59 PM
Entry Materials: 1) Digital portfolio in PDF format.
2) a short description of why you would like to be considered for the project.
3) A proposed concept for the project (may include but is not required).
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The location is the south end of Edison Street (see photos below) in Salt Lake City. It is an east-facing wall with a usable area that is approximately 7ft high and 100ft long or 700 square feet. The space is broken up into four (4) sections, the columns in between the sections will not be painted.
A successful mural proposal should celebrate the immediate Broadway neighborhood and Salt Lake City in general. This area of THE BLOCKS is known for its density of street art and arts-related businesses.
The mural project is envisioned as having a public participation element. It may take a paint-by-numbers approach, wherein the selected artist or team will design the mural with aspects of the painting that can be completed alongside community members. The participation element can take on many shapes, however, and applications are encouraged to suggest interesting ways to involve or represent the community.
THE BLOCKS is seeking portfolios and/or proposals from local artists and designers to design and install a large-scale mural. Proposals that include public participation elements are preferred. The call is open to Utah artists and artist-led teams. Those new to the public art process or artists and designers working outside of the traditional mural process are also highly encouraged to apply.
DETAILS
The vision of this project is to include an element for the community to contribute to the mural in some way. The selected artist will be responsible for the installation of their design including:
- Preparing the wall for painting
- Painting the mural
- Preparing any elements for community participation as necessary
The active dimensions of the wall are outlined in these images. Visiting the space to get an idea of scale and environment is highly suggested before applying.
See the street view HERE.
LOCATION NOTE:
Please note that this project will not be given public art status. This means that this work will be temporary art and has no guarantee for how long it will remain. The building is owned by the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City and they have stated that they don’t anticipate any reason the art would be removed but they will maintain the right to do so. In addition, the art should in no way cause damage to the structure. This project will not allow drilling, chipping, coring, etc.
REVIEW PROCESS AND CRITERIA
The total commission for the selected artist or team is $20,000. THE BLOCKS is responsible for costs related to the installation and community participation including paint, brushes, ladders, drop canvas, lights and other materials. Payment will be made as follows: an advance payment of $10,000 (50%) upon artist selection, design approval and signing a contract; the second payment of $10,000 will be made upon completion of the mural.
