Somatic Tracing Performance #2

Somatic Tracing Performance #2
Presented by Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art
Throughout Mitsu Salmon’s exhibition, Somatic Tracing, in the AIR Space there will be a series of performances that activate the work through actions, dance, and music. Wheels are attached to the paintings which move with the performers inside and outside the AIR space. The performances like the exhibition draw from the history of the building of the transcontinental railroad to notions of invisible Asian labor and healing. Salmon collaborates with four Asian American performers, who embody and converge these stories with their own. They create an elusive choreography and actions that are ever-transforming, fluctuating between the autonomous and collective. The project is in conversation with the artistic movements of Gutai, action painting, and Butoh, contemporary dance.
