“Hot Shot” a free film screening and discussion presented by Utah Film Center

Presented by Utah Film Center at Salt Lake City Public Library Main Branch

The Utah Film Center, in partnership with KUER’s Radiowest, invites you to a captivating evening of film exploration at the upcoming Through the Lens Spring Film Series free screening event. Join us on Wednesday, April 10th at 7 pm, at The City Library in Downtown Salt Lake City for a free showing of the gripping documentary, “Hotshot,” which delves into the most devastating wildfires in the American West.

Hotshots are the top-tier firefighters in the world. Director Gabriel Kirkpatrick Mann spent six years alongside them during California's worst wildfires, capturing intense footage. In the male-dominated world of wildland firefighters, “Hotshot” follows the lone female member of the Texas Canyon Hotshots, offering a unique perspective into the demanding job of battling wildfires manually in remote areas. These firefighters embody the spirit of the old west, facing death daily with grizzled appearances and dark humor.

The film provides insight into the tight-knit community of firefighters, showcasing the danger, camaraderie, and loss they encounter in one of the toughest jobs on earth. “Hotshot” also explores the rich indigenous history of wildfire management, the bureaucratic failures exacerbating fires, and the growing wildfire industry contributing to corrupt policies affecting rural homeowners.

Stick around after the screening for a Q&A session with filmmaker Gabriel Kirkpatrick Mann and Radiowest’s Doug Fabrizio.
