Call For Artists – Main Street Kiosk Project
THE BLOCKS is looking for local artists to help re-purpose the four kiosks located along Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City. Artwork will be located along the panels of the bottom half of the kiosk structures. This is an opportunity for our creative community to introduce more dialogue, color, and voice into our downtown atmosphere and public realm. This call is open to all professional artists, designers, and/or artist-led teams residing in Utah. Those new to the public art process or artists and designers working outside of the traditional public art process are also highly encouraged to apply. Selected artwork will be on display for a 3–6 month time period, with new artwork rotating on a seasonal basis.

BASICS
Artist Allowance: $600 ($300 upon selection / $300 upon installation)
Entry Deadline: Proposals by December 10th, 2018
Selection Notification: December 11th, 2018

DETAILS
Each kiosk consists of six sides. The activated area will be the bottom-half panels of each kiosk, with each panel measuring 39.5” wide x 44.5” tall. The finished piece of artwork will be showcased either on the two panels facing north or south. For visual consistency, we are asking artists to create one work that will span two panels, totaling a finished work that measures 79” wide x 44.5” tall.
Final artwork must be delivered in print-ready, CMYK formatted PDF with 1/2 inch bleed and crop marks.
REVIEW PROCESS / CRITERIA
The selection committee will be comprised of THE BLOCKS staff and a team of local artists and Arts community members. This committee will select 8 different artists/designers/artist-led teams to activate the kiosks based on the provided portfolio of previous work.
THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA IS CONSIDERED WHEN SELECTING ARTISTS:
- innovative, playful, and original artwork
- enhances community identity and sense of place
- stimulates creativity and excellence in Urban Design and Public Art
- appropriate for public right of way
- submissions in PDF format required
If selected, your final artwork must be delivered by 5pm on Thursday, December 13th. Delivery of your final artwork in the requested format anytime after this date will delay our set production schedule and may result in your work not being showcased in the kiosks. Selected artwork will be on display for a 3 month time period, after which a new call will be released and a new round of artwork will replace the previous. You may apply more than once in a given year. A specific time may be designated on opening day when the artists will be available to talk to the public/media about the installation.
COMPENSATION
Total commission for each selected artist/designer is $600 and is inclusive of artist’s fees and related expenses for design/creation of final artwork for the kiosks. THE BLOCKS is responsible for the costs related to the installation and production—printing, placement, marketing, etc. Payment shall be made as follows: an advance payment of $300, (50%) of the fee within ten business days following execution of an artist’s agreement; the second payment of $300 upon completion, installation and final approval of the artwork.
